What do I offer?

I offer a number of different manuscript evaluation and editorial analysis options for fiction of any genre, depending on your preferences and needs. These options include full evaluations, developmental editing, express evaluations and copy-editing. I am happy to evaluate everything from synopses and cover letters to a full manuscript.

If you have specific questions about your writing and want more in-depth analysis, I also offer Skype tutorials. This gives you the opportunity to ask me to address specific concerns, for instance your plot development, characterisation or dialogue.

Please see below for a more in-depth description of each kind of editorial work I offer.

"The difference between the almost right word and the right word is… the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning."

-Mark Twain
But which option is the one for me?

It can be overwhelming when you're presented with so many options, so here's a breakdown of what each one involves.

Manuscript Evaluation

In this kind of evaluation, you would get a document with a detailed analysis of your manuscript. This would address

  • plot structure and development

  • characterisation and development

  • description

  • style in broad terms

  • research and believability

  • use of literary techniques

  • advice on your next steps, according to your personal writing goals

If you have a complete manuscript and want broad feedback, this would be a good option. If you want closer analysis, you may want to look at Developmental Editing below.

Developmental Editing

This involves me reading and giving you feedback on your whole manuscript. It would also include suggestions on structure, character development, plot development and style. Unlike a manuscript evaluation, you will also get a level of copy-editing, suggestions in the margins with specific changes. In short, developmental editing provides a closer look at your manuscript.

In the editing process I would address

  • plot structure and development

  • characterisation and development

  • description

  • style

  • research and believability

  • use of literary techniques

  • presentation and punctuation

  • advice on your next steps, according to your personal writing goals

This is the most thorough option, but it will also take me the longest. This would be a good option for you if you have a complete manuscript, are considering approaching agents, or if you are looking into the possibilities of self-publishing.

Express Evaluation

For this kind of evaluation you might want to send me the first fifty pages of your manuscript, or the first 10 000 to 15 000 words. I can use the opening of your manuscript to highlight potential issues like characterisation or description. This is a much closer reading of your work and I would add notes to the Word document and use the 'track changes' function. I might make suggestions on style changes or small details. It would also be helpful to send me either a synopsis, or a few notes on where the story will go beyond what you've sent to me. This may help me look at the beginning of your plot and provide helpful feedback.

This would be a good choice for anyone who is just starting out and trying out their writing. If you're unsure of the direction of your writing and want to tackle some of the areas you find difficult, this may be the way to kick-start your writing, while also building your skills as you go.

Copy-editing

This is the process of a looking at a manuscript line by line, for inaccuracies, anomalies, confusion of meaning, as well as checking punctuation, grammar, spelling and style. It can involve editing the use of long sentences or the passive voice, or even correcting plot-holes. This would also include maintaining consistency in terms of spelling and punctuation, e.g. American spelling versus UK spellings.

This would also be a good choice for anyone looking into self-publishing or planning to approach an agent. It often helps to have a pair of fresh eyes look at your work and notice the little mistakes you've missed.

Writing Coach

I generally offer fifty minute sessions which can be used to focus on specific areas of your completed manuscript, workshop a developing project, or to develop and support your creative writing.

We can focus on broader topics as well, such as character development, plot structure, dialogue, or style.

Please contact me to inquire about these sessions and to find out my availability.
