What Do I Offer?

For circumstantial reasons I hadn’t been able to show my draft to anyone before Anouchka, and I couldn’t have had a more helpful editor. If you’re considering whether to work with her, my wholehearted advice is to do it.

What do I offer?

I offer a number of different manuscript evaluation and editorial analysis options for fiction of any genre, depending on your preferences and needs.

These are:

  • Manuscript evaluations

  • Express evaluations

  • Substantive editing

  • Line editing

  • Pitching to a literary agent package

If you have specific questions about your writing and want more in-depth analysis and advice on how to improve, I also offer one-to-one tutorials.

Please see below for a more in-depth description of each kind of editorial work I offer.

Manuscript Evaluation

In this kind of evaluation, you would get a document with a detailed analysis of your manuscript. This would address:

  • plot structure and development

  • characterisation and development

  • description

  • style in broad terms

  • research and realism, where relevant

  • use of literary techniques

  • advice on possible next steps, according to your personal writing goals

If you have a complete manuscript and want broad feedback, this would be a good option.

Express Evaluation

In this kind of evaluation, I would ask for the first 15 000 words of your manuscript, along with your synopsis. I will then use these to gain to initial overview of your work.

This would be a good choice for anyone who is just starting out and trying out their writing. If you're unsure of the direction of your writing or the direction you want to take it, this may be a good option for you.

[Anouchka] has a keen eye for detail, makes excellent suggestions to improve the flow of the story and challenges ideas that are clearly not working. Not only is she a superb editor, but also an excellent teacher.

Quick Pitch Package

While I cannot guarantee success with any agent or agency, I can help make sure that your work is as polished as it can be before you send it off. In this case, you would send me your first 15 000 words of your manuscript, your synopsis, and your cover letter. Do bear in mind, you will have better outcomes if you have an agent in mind so you can best tailor the cover letter.

I will then give you a line edit of your work, plus some broader feedback on your opening, and a close analysis of your synopsis and cover letter. Synopses especially can be very difficult to write as they involved condensing a lot of narrative into a short summary. I will also give you some more general advice on presentation and approach.

If you're considering seeking representation, this may be a good option for you. I will ask to see a sample of your manuscript prior to accepting the work. If I think your manuscript needs significant work before you can query an agent, I will advise you on what steps I think you need to take first.

Substantive Editing

This level of editing addresses your whole manuscript both on a macro level and on a line-by-line level. You would get specific feedback on each page. Unlike a manuscript evaluation, you will also get line editing, where I address specific individual issues rather than giving you an overview of the problems. In short, substantive editing provides a closer look at your manuscript.

I would address:

  • plot structure and development

  • characterisation and development

  • description

  • style

  • research and realism, where relevant

  • use of literary techniques

  • presentation and punctuation

  • advice on your next steps, according to your personal writing goals

This is the most thorough option, but it will also take me the longest. This would be a good option for you if you have a first draft or if you are looking into the possibilities of self-publishing.

It is hard to find a skilled, independent manuscript evaluator and so Anouchka was a brilliant discovery.

Line Editing

This is the process of a looking at a manuscript line by line, for inaccuracies, confusion of meaning, as well as checking punctuation, grammar, spelling, and style. It can involve editing the use of long sentences or the passive voice, or even correcting plot-holes. This would also include maintaining consistency in terms of spelling and punctuation, e.g. American spelling versus UK spellings.

This would also be a good choice for anyone looking into self-publishing or planning to approach an agent. It often helps to have a pair of fresh eyes look at your work and notice the little mistakes you've missed.
